A court order stating that you are no longer legally responsible for providing health insurance for a dependent is a qualifying life event that may allow you to remove the dependent from your Teachers Health Trust (THT) health plan.
Examples include:
A court order stating that you are no longer required to provide health insurance for a child.
A court order terminating legal guardianship and your responsibility to provide health insurance.
Another court order that clearly releases you from the legal obligation to provide health insurance coverage for a dependent.
To request this coverage change, submit a qualifying life event through the THT Member Portal under the Covered Members section. You must provide a complete, signed copy of the court order. The court order must clearly establish that you are no longer legally responsible for providing health insurance for the dependent.
This process applies only to standard court orders affecting dependent eligibility. It does not apply to Qualified Medical Support Orders (QMSOs), which follow a separate review and qualification process.
Requests should be submitted within 60 days of the court order. Requests submitted after 60 days require an appeal before they can be considered.
Steps to Complete
Log in to the THT Member Portal.
Navigate to the Covered Members section and select Delete Dependent.
Select the dependent(s) to be removed.
Select None of the Above as the qualifying life event.
Enter the date of the Life Event.
Upload the complete signed court order.
Optional - If you would like to change your medical, dental, or vision plans, you may do so now.
Review your information and submit the life event request for review.
Processing Timeline
Most qualifying life events are processed within 2–3 business days after all required documentation has been received.
Members will receive a determination letter once the request has been processed.
If the request is approved, the dependent will generally be removed from the THT systems within 24–72 hours. If applicable, replacement ID cards reflecting the updated coverage will be mailed to the member's address on file within 2–4 weeks.
