When a dependent gains health insurance coverage through another source, such as an employer-sponsored plan, Medicaid, or Medicare Part B, the member may request to remove that dependent from their Teachers Health Trust coverage. To process the request, the member must submit a life event through the THT Member Portal and provide documentation verifying the new coverage.
If the request is submitted within the required timeframe, the dependent will be removed effective the end of the month in which the new coverage became effective.
Members must submit this request within 60 days of the dependent's gain of coverage.
Requests submitted more than 60 days after the dependent gains coverage require an appeal and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Supporting documentation must be provided to verify both the dependent relationship and the dependent's gain of coverage date.
Acceptable documents may include:
Certificate of Coverage (COC) issued by the insurance carrier
A Certificate of Coverage must come directly from the insurance company on official letterhead and cannot be a document issued solely by the employer.
Medicaid approval or enrollment letter
Medicare card showing Medicare Part B coverage
