A court order requiring you to provide health insurance for a dependent is a qualifying life event that may allow you to add the dependent to your Teachers Health Trust (THT) health plan.
Examples include:
A court appointing you as the legal guardian of a child and requiring you to provide health insurance.
A court order requiring you to add a child or other dependent to your health plan.
Another court order that clearly establishes your legal responsibility to provide health insurance coverage for a dependent.
To request this coverage change, submit a qualifying life event through the THT Member Portal under the Covered Members section. You must provide a complete, signed copy of the court order along with the dependent's birth certificate. The court order must clearly establish your legal responsibility to provide health insurance for the dependent.
This process applies only to standard court orders requiring a coverage change. It does not apply to Qualified Medical Support Orders (QMSOs), which follow a separate review and qualification process.
Requests should be submitted within 60 days of the court order. Requests submitted after 60 days require an appeal before they can be considered.
Steps to Complete
Log in to the THT Member Portal.
Navigate to the Covered Members section and select Add Dependent.
Select None of the Above as the qualifying life event.
Enter the date of the life event.
Upload the following required documentation:
Complete signed court order.
Dependent's birth certificate.
Optional - If you would like to change your medical, dental, or vision plans, you may do so now.
Review your information and submit the life event request for review.
Processing Timeline
Most qualifying life events are processed within 2–3 business days after all required documentation has been received.
Members will receive a determination letter once the request has been processed.
If the request is approved, the dependent will generally be added to the THT systems within 24–72 hours, and updated ID cards will be mailed to the member's address on file within 2–4 weeks, if applicable.
Premiums After a Qualifying Life Event (QLE)
Submitting a QLE might affect your premium and result in underpaid premiums if the coverage is retroactive which would mean you owe arrears. For information on how much your premium will be after adding dependents, visit the premium calculator.
