Qualified Medical Child Support Order (QMCSO)

What is a QMCSO?

A QMCSO is a judgment, decree, or court/administrative order that:

  • Requires a participant to provide health insurance coverage for a child

  • Identifies the child as an alternate recipient

  • Specifies coverage details and timeframe

How do QMCSCOs work?

These orders are typically issued directly to an employer or health plan through a child support agency or court as part of a legal obligation. QMCSO enrollments do not follow normal life event rules and may include retroactive coverage, depending on the effective date listed in the order.

Once THT receives a QMCSO or Medical Support Notice, THT reviews the notice to confirm it meets plan requirements. If the order is valid, THT is legally required to comply, and the child must be enrolled on the employee’s health plan as directed. This enrollment is mandatory and does not require the employees’ consent. Once processed, notifications are sent to the appropriate parties.

What if my premium changes?

Adding the child as a result of a QMCSO may raise the employee's premium. The employee is fully responsible for any premium increases that result from a QMCSO.

When can I drop my child(ren)?

Any children who are enrolled per a QMCSO may not be dropped from the employee's plan during annual open enrollment or with a Qualifying Life Event. Coverage for the affected child(ren) must remain in place for the duration of the order unless an updated or terminated order is received. Once the order is terminated or its conditions have been met, THT will automatically remove the child(ren) from the employee's plan.
