Members can add a newborn by submitting a birth event through the THT Member Portal under the Covered Members section. If your spouse or domestic partner is the other parent of the newborn, you may add them to your plan at the same time you add your newborn.
Important: Newborns are not automatically added to your plan.
Grandchildren are ineligible for THT
Though THT will cover eligible employees' children up to age 26 (including covering expenses related to any pregnancy), grandchildren of the employee are not eligible dependents. Any request to add a grandchild will be denied and any healthcare expenses incurred by a grandchild are ineligible for reimbursement from THT.
Uploading Documentation
Supporting documentation must be provided to verify the newborn's eligibility and date of birth. The birth certificate must include the employee's name or the employee's domestic partner/spouse's name.
Applying for a Birth Certificate
The official birth certificate is required to enroll your newborn. When a baby is born, hospitals typically give you a paper form to complete the birth certificate application. Additionally, you can apply for a birth certificate online with the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD).
While you wait for the birth certificate
To begin the process before the official birth certificate is available, members may submit temporary hospital documentation such as:
Certificate of Live Birth
Hospital birth confirmation form
Baby footprint form (if applicable and completed by the hospital)
The official birth certificate must be submitted once it becomes available. Failure to submit the official birth certificate within the required timeframe may result in termination of the newborn’s coverage. If additional time is needed to obtain the birth certificate, request an extension by contacting THT's Eligibility Team.
Once the life event is submitted and approved, coverage for the newborn is typically effective retroactive to the child’s date of birth, provided all required documentation is received. Members should report this life event within 60 days of the birth. Requests submitted more than 60 days after the arrival date will be denied unless an appeal is approved.
