Retiree enrollment begins once you have officially submitted and completed your retirement through CCSD. This step is required, as Teachers Health Trust (THT) cannot begin the enrollment process until your retirement file is received from CCSD.
After your retirement is processed, THT will receive your information and review your eligibility for retiree coverage. Once this review is complete, you will be sent a welcome letter confirming whether you meet the eligibility requirements and outlining your enrollment options and next steps. It is important to monitor your mail and email carefully during this time.
Tip: Replace your work email with a personal email in the THT member portal prior to your last day so you don't miss important updates. Often, your employer will revoke access to your email on your last day in the classroom.
Enroll in Retiree Coverage within 31 Days
If you are eligible, you must complete your enrollment within 31 calendar days of losing your active employee coverage. (If you finished the school year, your last day of active employee coverage will be August 31. Therefore, you have until October 1 to enroll in retiree coverage.) This is a strict deadline and serves as your only opportunity to enroll in retiree coverage. If you do not enroll within this timeframe, or if you choose to waive coverage at retirement, you will not be eligible to enroll in the future.
Postponement exception: If you have a spouse enrolled with CCSD who has THT insurance, you may be eligible to postpone your retiree coverage for up to five (5) years if you are added to your spouse's plan immediately following your retirement.
How to Complete Your Retiree Enrollment
You can complete your enrollment once you have received a Retiree Welcome letter from Teachers Health Trust. Log into the THT member portal and click on the gray banner at the top that says "Need Retiree Coverage?"
Dependents On Retiree Coverage
Only dependents who are already active on your plan on the last day of your active employee coverage are eligible to be enrolled in your retiree plan. You are not required to maintain the enrollment of any dependents; however, you will not have the opportunity to add dependents when you retire.
Effective Date of Retiree Coverage
Upon approval of your retiree enrollment and receipt of your first payment, your retiree coverage will be activated effective the date immediately following the last day of your active employee coverage. For example, if your active employee coverage terminated August 31, your retiree coverage would begin September 1.
